MEMPHIS, Tenn — New data from the University of Memphis Public Safety institute and the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission, released Wednesday, showed a continued drop in every major crime category for a second consecutive quarter.
Preliminary data from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation suggest that major violent crime in both Memphis and Shelby County dropped by 17.4%, including a decline of 4.3% in murder, 32.4% in forcible rape, and 17.1% in aggravated assault within the City of Memphis throughout the first half of 2025.
Major property crime rates in the city also fell by 22.2% throughout Q1 and 2 of 2025, while vehicle theft and burglaries fell by 36.4% and 23.4%, respectively…
