Man accused in five armed robberies, auto theft

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 19-year-old man is accused of robbing five people and hitting them in the face with his gun, and stealing two cars along with victims’ phones and wallets.

James Carter is charged with five counts of aggravated robbery, theft of property (automobile), two counts of evading arrest and more. He is in jail on $250,000 bond.

It all happened from mid-June to mid-July in an area just east of downtown. The victims were on Tate, Vance, Danny Thomas, Cleaborn and Cynthia Place when they say Carter walked up and robbed them at gunpoint.

One woman also had her Hyundai Elantra stolen from her driveway on St. Paul Avenue on June 30.

The next day, police say they tried to initiate a traffic stop on Carter while he was driving the stolen Hyundai on Winchester Road. Carter allegedly led police on a brief chase in the car, then on foot…
