County scraps proposed North Memphis jail site with vote

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A decision could be made today on the future site of a proposed new Shelby County Jail.

Shelby County Commissioners are expected to take up a resolution Monday that would eliminate a controversial plan to put a new jail in the New Chicago community at the site of the old Firestone plant.

“I am definitely with redeveloping the area, but not at the cost of the constituents of this neighborhood,” said Pastor Carlos Rodgers. “To me this seems to be another hard line gentrification issue where we are going to end up shoving everyone out of their homes they’ve been for generations.”…
