MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Shelby County Commissioners voted down plans to bring a new Shelby County Jail to Memphis’ New Chicago neighborhood.
The proposal would have brought a new Shelby County Criminal Justice Center, complete with the jails, all of the courts, the district attorney’s office, juvenile court, and the juvenile detention center, to the New Chicago neighborhood in North Memphis.
Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner has long said the new jail is a necessity, but at Monday’s meeting, all but one of the public comments were against the proposal. Several of those comments were from elected leaders…
