University of Memphis kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

The University of Memphis marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday with a kickoff dinner hosted by the Hispanic Student Association. The event featured free food with live music and dance performances, opening a series of campus programs celebrating Hispanic culture.

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed nationally from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The dates coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
