Mid-South doctor weighs in on ‘nightmare bacteria’ cases rising in U.S.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Health officials are warning about the rise of the so-called “nightmare bacteria,” a dangerous superbug that is resistant to most antibiotics.

The bacteria, formally known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, has been labeled a serious threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A new CDC report says infection rates from CRE rose nearly 70 percent between 2019 and 2023.
