15-year-old charged after bringing gun to Memphis school, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police were called to a school in the 800 block of Brownlee Rd. on Friday afternoon after reports of a 15-year-old student with a handgun.

Police spoke to the school security officer at Freedom Preparatory High School who said he was told by several students the teen suspect had a handgun. The school officer said he secured the gun and handcuffed the teen.

The suspect told Memphis police he never brandished the gun, and he brought it to school because he was “being threatened and he felt the need to defend himself.” Police spoke to a students who said they saw the suspect take the gun out of his backpack and hide it behind a painting. The students immediately told the school’s security officer what they’d seen…
