Ex-MPD officer seeks release due to ‘unacceptable’ jail conditions

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Attorneys for a former Memphis Police (MPD) officer who pleaded guilty in Tyre Nichols’ federal case filed a motion seeking the release of their client due to “unacceptable” conditions in jail.

Emmitt Martin III has been locked up since February after his bond was revoked because of a harassment case. In a court filing, the attorneys say their client was being held in solitary confinement, spending 21 hours alone in his cell and up to 24 hours on the weekends.

His attorneys wrote, “Despite having no criminal history preceding this case and, to defense counsel’s knowledge, no disciplinary issues while in custody, Mr. Martin is being detained in a brutal form of confinement: for approximately 21 hours per day (24 hours per day on the weekends), he is in effective solitary In the court filing, his attorneys say Martin is being held at an undisclosed location that’s out of the state. They’re asking a judge to release him or to at least hold a hearing about it.”…
