Stay placed on police chief in RowVaughn Wells’ lawsuit against City of Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A judge has placed a stay on the Memphis Police Department chief of police’s involvement in the civil case filed by Tyre Nichols’ mother against the City of Memphis.

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis submitted in September 2025 a motion to be dismissed from RowVaughn Wells’ $550 million lawsuit against the city for its role in the 2023 beating death of her son, Tyré Nichols.

Davis’s attorney argued that she should be removed from the lawsuit on the basis of qualified immunity. A judge denied that motion…
