Tennessee councilwoman urges Governor Lee to relax grocery sales tax during shutdown

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As thousands of Tennesseans face the loss of SNAP benefits on Saturday, a Memphis city councilwoman wrote a letter to Governor Bill Lee asking him to push a proposal that would suspend grocery taxes every weekend until the federal government shutdown ends.

A release from the office of Jerri Green says her request is backed by Tennessee State House Representative Aftyn Behn, who previously sponosored a bill to completely end the statewide grocery tax.

In her letter to the governor, Green says she worries that the Governor’s efforts to plug SNAP dependent families into nonprofit and faith-based food bank organizations will not be enough to reach all of the families affected by the lapse in benefits…
