Memphis City Councilman JB Smiley Jr. plans to introduce a resolution allocating $250,000 to “relief and resources” for residents in need as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, funding lapses, he announced Nov. 3.
“Families shouldn’t have to choose between feeding their children or paying their rent,” Smiley said in a press release. “We have a moral obligation to act now…not wait to protect our neighbors and stabilize our city. Memphis can and must lead the way.”
Smiley also announced the 901 Day of Giving, encouraging employees from city, county and state government offices, as well as employees of other municipalities in Shelby County, to support local families who suffer from food insecurity…
