MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Two women locked up in Shelby County have sued the sheriff and several jailers after they claim a male detainee was able to get into their cells and sexually assault them.
The two women said overcrowding at the Shelby County jail at 201 Poplar led the sheriff’s office to move some male detainees to the women’s facility, Jail East, over on Haley Road. In the 20-page lawsuit, the women claim one of those inmates was able to escape his cell and attack them in their cells.
The lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of the two female detainees; it lists Shelby County; Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr.; and multiple corrections officers as Defendants…
