Family wants answers after inmate dies at hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The daughter of a woman who died at the hospital while in jail custody wants answers.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told WREG that 45-year-old Tiffany Dukes died at Regional One back on November 17, after being hospitalized for several weeks.

Since then, her daughter said she hasn’t been able to get answers about her mother’s death and questions how she ended up in the hospital in the first place.

The sheriff’s office released a statement Tuesday about in-custody deaths and said that detainees are much sicker than in previous years.

SCSO said that some detainees who come into the jail are in wheelchairs, on oxygen, waiting for open heart surgery, in the middle of cancer treatments, and/or withdrawing from drugs and alcohol.
