MLGW says 25,000 customers need federal assistance

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Temperatures will remain below average this week—dipping near or below freezing—prompting many in the Mid-South to crank up the heat sooner than expected.

That can put a strain on your electric bill and, in turn, your wallet. MLGW said thousands of its customers rely on some form of assistance, such as the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, to keep their thermostat running.

“Our customer base has about between 17,000 and 25,000 of our customers actually need LIHEAP funds,” said Ursula Madden, MLGW Vice President of Corporate Communications. “The president just released $3 billion, and some of that money is definitely going to come to Tennessee and to Shelby County.”…
