Man tries to cash $8K tax refund check with fake ID, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a Memphis man walked into a payday lender and tried to cash someone else’s tax refund check worth more than $8,000 by using a fake driver’s license.

Police say it happened Friday at an Ace Cash Express on Elvis Presley Boulevard, where Anthony Ford allegedly tried to cash a U.S. Treasury refund check that was made out to a different man.

Ford showed the teller a driver’s license with the victim’s name and photo, but couldn’t state his Social Security number…
