Man charged in 2023 Jewish school shooting avoids prison in plea deal

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man charged in a shooting outside a Memphis Jewish school in 2023 avoided prison in a plea agreement reached with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

Joel Bowman was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, employment of a firearm to commit a felony, carrying a weapon on school property, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon after police say he fired several shots while attempting to enter the Margolin Hebrew Academy on White Station Road.

Bowman pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault charges on Friday and received two 8-year suspended sentences.

The other charges against him were dismissed, court records show.

Bowman was a former student at Margolin Hebrew Academy. A friend told WREG that Bowman was diagnosed with PTSD, perhaps stemming from his father’s death in 2003, when police fatally shot him during a mental health episode…
