MSCS board fails to approve new cleaning contract for 2026

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Shelby County Schools will not have custodians at approximately 35 schools in 2026, following the school board’s failure to approve a contract with a new cleaning company.

The vote occurred as some board members expressed concerns over past complaints against the maintenance company ABM Industries. Board leaders say the cleaning contract had to be rebid by law and ABM was selected after this process.

“We’re here this year because by law we had to rebid the contract for a new vendor and this particular vendor ABM has won,” said Dr. Roderick Richmond, interim superintendent of Memphis Shelby County Schools…
