Memphis Zoo mourns loss of grizzly bear

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Zoo announced the passing of Else, a female grizzly bear, on Thursday.

According to the zoo, Else experienced a sudden and rapid decline in her health, despite intensive, round-the-clock care from her keepers and veterinary team.

The zoo said veterinarians conducted a full postmortem examination as part of standard animal care protocols, and additional diagnostic testing is underway.

“Else was born in Wyoming in January 2009, along with her brothers Yukon and Cochise. After their mother was killed during a conflict with a hiker, the three cubs were orphaned and later came to live at the Memphis Zoo in July 2009,” said the zoo.
