Family scammed, left without headstone for woman with mystery illness

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Months after a woman lost her 15-year battle with an illness that baffled doctors, her loved ones are still waiting for a headstone to memorialize her life.

Shanyna Isom, who gained worldwide attention after she developed a medical condition that caused rice-like stems and fingernails to grow on her body, died in February.

Her brother, Jed Gary, said in April he contacted a company that makes personalized tombstones, paid more than $2,500, then learned he had been scammed.

“We drove to Memphis, and we had a family ready to go have balloons ready, and we came to find out there’s no tombstone, so that was on my sister’s birthday, which was September 19,” said Gary. “I was pissed off about that because I was like, ok. Well, the guy has been stringing us along for months.”…
