City of Memphis sees drop in crime rates, MPD says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department said Thursday the city made measurable gains in public safety in 2025, reporting sharp declines in several major crime categories and fewer than 200 murders for the first time since 2019.

MPD released statistics showing notable year-over-year reductions across violent and property crimes:

  • 48% decrease in carjackings
  • 50% reduction in interstate shootings
  • 22% decrease in aggravated assaults
  • 31% drop in robberies
  • 26% decrease in murders
