Man accused of stealing millions indicted in DeSoto County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Taiwanese national accused of draining the accounts of victims in an international fraud scheme has been indicted in DeSoto County, Mississippi after being captured Tuesday in California.

Chia Lai, 44, primarily targeted elderly adults, stealing millions of dollars, DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton said.

He is facing four felony counts, including conspiracy to commit fraud, false pretense, money laundering, and wire fraud.
