MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Briony Welborn, a 7th-grade student at Jackson Academic STEAM Academy, won the Jackson-Madison County School System’s Districtwide Spelling Bee Thursday night at Liberty Technology High School.
A total of 23 students from 3rd through 8th grade competed for the top prize. The students studied a list of 400 different words to prepare for the big event.

The event marked the first time JMCSS has held a district-wide spelling bee in over 20 years. Mila Shaw, a 5th grader at Pope School, finished 2nd. And Amir Harris, a 5th grader at Community Montessori, finished 3rd.
After winning, Welborn will participate in the online test portion to qualify for regionals…
