‘We’re fighting with seconds:’ SCSO deputies share moment they rushed into freezing water, saved two boys

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. (WMC) – A seven-year-old boy continues fighting for his life in the hospital Monday after he and his 12-year-old brother fell through ice on a pond at Southwind Lakes Apartments, located in Southeast Shelby County, Friday night.

“We take a risk of sacrificing our tomorrow for someone else’s today,” said Edward Owens, a deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Owens, along with Deputy Israel Muhammad, dove straight into freezing water Friday night to save the two boys.

Owens said children “are our greatest asset and to be protected,” which is why there was no hesitation, just immediate action…
