Vacant house in Midtown burns down, neighbors point fingers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Neighbors are blaming the city and an out-of-state real estate investor for a fire that destroyed a house they say squatters have been using for years.

The vacant house caught on fire on Tuesday. The fire did not spread to any surrounding structures, and no one was hurt, but fire investigators said it was intentionally set.

“I wasn’t surprised that someone finally burned the house down,” said Clay Polk

Clay Polk said when he moved into the Overton Crossing neighborhood in 2019, the house at 2051 North Watkins was one of the nicest on the street.

He said that in 2021, an investor from Alabama purchased the house, evicted the tenant, and, over time, the property fell into disrepair…
