Clayborn Temple to be rebuilt as replica building for historical preservation, says owner

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – According to the owner, Clayborn Temple will be rebuilt as a replica after architects and engineers decided that enough of the old building can be salvaged.

Anasa Troutman said they were able to fundraise around $5 million by the end of 2025. On Friday, Congressman Steve Cohen announced an additional $3.1 million in funding will go to the restoration project.

It’s been almost a year since a devastating fire ripped through Clayborn Temple. The church was built in 1892 and has a rich history of civil rights work that took place here in Memphis.

While it’s been untouched for so long since it was charred by an arsonist, Troutman said they will build a replica of the building…
