Guns for groceries: Church transfers guns into garden tools

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis church is hoping to get 200 guns off the streets of Memphis with its annual anonymous Guns to Gardens safe surrender event.

Evergreen Presbyterian Church is giving away more than $8,000 in Kroger gift cards in exchange for the weapons during the one-day event on Saturday.

The unwanted guns will be dismantled to be transformed into garden tools.

Organizers said the gift cards are a “thank you” for their contribution to the movement. At the previous two Guns to Gardens safe surrender events, more than 130 unwanted firearms were surrendered and dismantled…
