Poplar Avenue closed after contractor hits water, gas mains

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police temporarily closed a section of Poplar Avenue at Fenwick for a leak that sent water spewing several feet into the air Monday afternoon.

It began when a contractor bored into both a water line and gas main, Memphis Light Gas & Water said. Gas was shut off to the area at MLGW made repairs.

The closure was on a busy stretch of roadway between the Poplar/Union Avenue viaduct and the main library.

By around 2 p.m., police said the scene was clear…
