Parents, advocates call for state takeover of Memphis-Shelby County Schools

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Parents and education advocates are calling for the state to take over Memphis-Shelby County Schools, saying the district’s newly announced accountability plan is not enough to address years of academic struggles.

The calls came Monday evening, March 9, as parents, advocates and community members gathered outside MSCS headquarters to voice frustration with district leadership and demand more urgent action.

The demonstration comes just days after the district unveiled a new accountability plan it said is designed to revamp schools and improve student outcomes. The plan focuses on four major areas: stronger governance and accountability, academic success, district finances and data-driven decision-making related to school buildings…
