Memphis mayor on dropping crime rates, upgrading the Sheraton Hotel, and the manhunt for a man who shot an MPD officer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Mayor Paul Young visited the FOX13 studio Monday morning, and spoke on several topics, including the dropping crime rate, the proposed upgrades to the former Sheraton Hotel, and the manhunt for the man suspected of shooting a Memphis Police Officer.

On teens out of school during spring break: Mayor Young said the city wants to make sure that it’s engaging with young people while they’re out of school. “Idle minds create activity that we don’t necessarily want to see,” he said. To that end, the mayor said eight community centers would be open all day, all week, with activities planned for kids who show up there. He also said parents need to be taking responsibility in knowing where their children are and who they’re spending time with. “It takes a community effort,” he said.

On the manhunt for the man accused of shooting an MPD officer: Mayor Young said he was aware that there have been a number of requests for the body camera footage from the shooting, but said it would not be released until the investigation is over. He said they are still searching for the suspect, but the officer is okay, and expected to fully recover…
