Off-duty captain reunites with teens he rescued from flooded creek

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (WMC) – An off-duty deputy reunited Monday with two teenagers he rescued from a submerged car after flood waters swept their vehicle into a creek.

Captain Jonathan Bigham was off duty when he spotted a car at the bottom of a creek at Tchulahoma and Church Road in Southaven. He entered the water and pulled out Mya Esquivel and Kaitlyn Sykes.

Reunion and recognition

The two teens attended a ceremony Monday to honor Bigham for his actions during the November rescue. Community leaders also recognized Bigham for his quick decision-making during the incident.

“I appreciate the recognition. I’m glad that the citizens of our county and everywhere else can see we have a volunteer unit — it’s working,” Bigham said.

The girls’ mothers said the accident continues to affect them and that they are reluctant to allow their daughters to drive alone…
