Social workers are St. Jude’s unsung heroes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family enters the fight. At St. Jude, Clay Culp is one of their first coaches.

“I meet with families very early,” Culp said. “And I stay with them throughout their treatment.”

Culp is a clinical social worker at the research hospital’s brain and solid tumor clinics. He helps parents navigate practical pressures like work, school and finances, especially when they feel they have to hold everything together.

“I want to make sure that there’s somebody asking, ‘Hey, Mom, how are you doing? Dad, how are you doing?’ and creating space for them to really take care of themselves and process emotionally.”…
