‘See That My Grave Is Kept Clean’: Blues fans organize clean-up at storied South Memphis cemetery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fans of some prominent blues musicians are leading an effort to clean up the place where Memphis musical artists are laid to rest.

Hollywood Cemetery in South Memphis is the final resting place of legendary blues artist Furry Lewis, who is ironically known for his song titled “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean.” Other blues artists and notable Memphians, like Frank Stokes, are also buried there.

We found a grave marker among the brush. When Lewis’s fans saw the condition of the cemetery, they were speechless.

South Memphis cemetery overgrown; families pleading for help

“I was just shocked,” said filmmaker Augusta Palmer. “Trees were encroaching on Furry Lewis’s grave, kind of hanging over it,” said Palmer.
