Shelby County offers safe disposal for expired medications

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents they can safely dispose of unused or expired medication at permanent drop-off location across the county.

Officials say the office operates three Drug Take-Back boxes, available year-round, to keep potentially dangerous medication out of the wrong hands and protect the environment.

The drop-off location include:

  • Front lobby of the Sheriff’s Office Training Academy, 993 Dovecrest Road
  • Entrance to the Sheriff’s Office Substation, located at 11670 Memphis-Arlington Road
  • Court Coordinator’s Office at the Criminal Justice Center, 201 Poplar Avenue, in downtown Memphis.

The Sheriff’s Office says a wide range of items are accepted, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, pet medications, medicated ointments, lotions, drops, inhalers, and liquid medications in leak-proof containers. Pill can be dropped off in any packaging, including bottles, bags, or foil.

However, some items are not allowed. Those include illegal drugs and narcotics, needles or syringes, blood sugar equipment, thermometers, IV bags, and any bloody or infectious waste. Personal care products like shampoo and non-medicated lotions are also not accepted…
