Woman gets probation for $52K SNAP benefits fraud

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A DeSoto County resident entered a plea agreement and was sentenced to five years of probation for food stamp fraud totaling approximately $52,000, according to the Mississippi Department of Human Services.

On Feb. 6, Lashonda Smith of DeSoto County entered a plea agreement with the District Attorney in DeSoto County Circuit Court, related to fraudulent receipt of public assistance benefits.

MDHS said the investigation determined that Smith improperly received $52,053 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits after failing to accurately report her household income.
