SCSO: Mom says she’ll beat DUI charge after driving drunk with teen

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman allegedly told deputies she would beat her DUI charge after she was arrested for driving drunk with her 13-year-old daughter in the passenger seat.

Erica Newsome, 36, was charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence, public intoxication, child abuse and neglect, and child endangerment after she was pulled over on Highway 385 near Riverdale Road late Tuesday night.

A deputy said he was on routine patrol in the area of Winchester and Hwy 385 when he observed a westbound Jeep Compass get on 385 from Winchester, swerving and nearly striking the guardrail.

The deputy said the Jeep continued westbound on Hwy 385, nearly struck the guardrail, and continued swerving between multiple lanes.
