Citing a surge in the need for human – and pet – food assistance, United Food Bank in Mesa has set a special event this week to help.
It is teaming up with PetSmart Charities, “to make sure both ends of the leash are getting fed” 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, July 10, with a Neighbor Pantry at 358 E. Javelina Ave., Mesa, where families can pick up free groceries and pet food.
“When families struggle to eat, their pets often feel that strain as well,” United Food Bank said in a release. “Many people even make the heartbreaking choice to feed their pets before feeding themselves, highlighting just how deep the crisis has become.
This Neighbor’s Pantry program is powered by the nonprofit’s Grocery Rescue program, which recovers fresh, nutritious food from local grocery stores that would otherwise go to waste…
