NEWCOMB, NM — Flash flooding in New Mexico killed three people near Newcomb as unusually powerful storms swept across the Southwest and sent emergency crews into water rescues in parts of Arizona.
The deadly flooding came after a stretch of intense rain spread across the region during the Southwest monsoon. In New Mexico, officers said they were called around 12:30 a.m. local time to reports that three people had been washed away near Newcomb on the Navajo Nation.
Police said they found two adults and one juvenile at the scene. All three were pronounced dead. Elsewhere, the same storm pattern dropped more than a month’s worth of rain in just a few hours north of Phoenix on Wednesday afternoon.
