A drug-trafficking ring accused of working on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel used Phoenix as a pickup point to funnel fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine into Wichita, Kansas, federal authorities say, and the operation has now collapsed under the weight of fifteen guilty pleas. The case describes couriers who drove from Wichita to Phoenix and other locations every few weeks, loaded up on drugs, and hauled them back to Kansas for distribution.
A Years-Long Courier Route Between Two States
According to the Wichita Eagle, Wichita police, the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations began investigating the cartel network in late 2022, tracking traffickers who transported fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine from Phoenix and other locations to Wichita for distribution every few weeks. As reported by AZ Family, the operation distributed drugs across Kansas on behalf of the Sinaloa Cartel, with Phoenix serving repeatedly as the pickup point before couriers made the return trip east.
The case cracked open when investigators learned of a plan to bring 160,000 counterfeit Percocet pills laced with fentanyl into Wichita for distribution, the newspaper’s report notes. Law enforcement reportedly set up surveillance, watched the exchange play out, and then intercepted the drugs following a traffic stop.
Ringleader Gets 19 Years, Contact With Mexico Cited
Euriel Talavera, a 32-year-old Wichita resident identified by investigators as the operation’s ringleader, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and was sentenced to 19 years in federal prison, the same report states. The account adds that Talavera stayed in regular contact with cartel members in Mexico throughout the scheme. Jonathan Gutierrez-Diaz, a 30-year-old Mexican national living in the United States, was sentenced to just over 11 years in prison — 136 months — for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, per the Eagle’s reporting. Fourteen other defendants pleaded guilty in connection with the case and received sentences ranging from probation to more than 11 years in prison.
Sentences Spanned Probation to More Than a Decade
Among those fourteen, Joe Louis Washington, a 33-year-old Wichita resident, was sentenced to 120 months, while Aron Garcia-Campa, 36, of Wichita, received 96 months. Alexis Ortega-Ramos, a 29-year-old Mexican national living in the United States, was sentenced to 72 months. Shelan D. Peters, 24, and Jermel L.
