Junk stored outdoors, overgrown vegetation and inoperable, unregistered vehicles parked indefinitely outside are the top five citation generators for property code violations in Mesa.
Council wants to curb these eye-sores and recently discussed more aggressive actions such as capping the number of extensions requested to fix a violation, enhancing existing codes and increasing fines for non-residential owners.
“I know you all have unique and special stories that your district has experienced and you hear it every day from folks,” City Manager Scott Butler told Council at a Sept. 17 mini strategic planning session. “It became very clear that this was a huge priority to City Council.”
Mesa averages around 2,100 open and active complaints throughout the year and has issued over 600 citations since the first quarter of this year, according to Angelica Guevara, Code Compliance director.
