A pipe burst above the bleachers at Phoenix Raceway Saturday evening, sending wastewater raining down on fans the night before Sunday’s race. Video circulating on social media showed the liquid gushing from a broken suite pipe, with onlookers scrambling to avoid getting soaked.
According to 12News, a Phoenix Raceway spokesperson said the pipe from a suite burst at approximately 5:50 p.m. Fans seated below and near the leak moved to avoid getting wet, according to spectator Garrett Brink.
Brink described the scene in blunt terms, telling the outlet the water was smelly and that “there was toilet paper hanging down.” He called the incident a health hazard and said it amounted to an unacceptable problem for paying spectators. Workers at the track helped affected fans and placed a container beneath the leak to catch the falling water, per Brink’s account.
Track Says Pipe Fixed, Area Sanitized Ahead of Sunday’s Race

The track said it would be ready to welcome fans for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event, which Brink predicted would draw an even bigger crowd than Saturday evening’s gathering given the scale of the race.
