Mesa aggravated assault suspect faces 11 charges

Thomas Zavala has been booked into Maricopa County Jail on charges ranging from burglary and theft to assault with a deadly weapon and criminal damage in connection with a Feb. 1 crime spree in Mesa, authorities said Friday.

No community members or law enforcement officers were hurt, and a woman’s involvement in the incident remains under investigation, officials said.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about 6 a.m. Feb. 1 to an armed robbery at a business near Crismon Road and Apache Trail. A man and a woman who arrived on a stolen golf cart broke into the occupied business, and the man shot multiple rounds into the store using an AR-style rifle before fleeing, according to an MCSO release.

Deputies found the golf cart near 105th Place and University Drive, but the pair had fled.

While working at the two scenes, a “trouble call” came in near Crismon Road and University Drive where the male suspect involved in the earlier incident attempted a home invasion and fired multiple rounds at the residence, MCSO officials said.
