Crashes involving 10 vehicles on highway in Tempe leave 1 child dead

Crashes involving 10 vehicles killed one juvenile and closed the westbound lanes of the U.S. 60 at Loop 101 for nearly four hours Monday morning.

The first crash came about 8 a.m. between Rural Road and McClintock Drive, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. An SUV changing lanes from left to right collided with other vehicles in the lane, leading to a collision with seven other vehicles, DPS said.

One of the vehicles was a loaded commercial dump truck. Diesel oil spilled from its saddle tank from the westbound HOV lane. Scattered debris was seen across the westbound lanes on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s cameras.

A pickup truck landed in the eastbound lanes of the highway after crashing through the concrete barrier and crossing over into the eastbound HOV lane.

DPS said several people were transported to the hospitals for injuries, including two juveniles, one of whom died at the hospital.

A second crash happened about 20 minutes later, involving a DPS patrol vehicle and a SUV.
