Suspect lunged at Mesa police with knife before officer-involved shooting

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – A man who lunged with a knife at officers in Mesa said he tried to provoke them into killing him, authorities say. On Friday morning, Mesa police were called around 8:30 a.m. about a landscape vehicle that was reported stolen out of Tempe. Police were able to find the vehicle from its GPS tracker near Stapley Drive and Main Street. When officers found the man, identified as 25-year-old Pedro Garcia, they told him to surrender. Instead, he ignored them, took out a knife from his waistband, pointed it at them and lunged toward one officer. Authorities say he was about 25 feet away from officers.
