Man who beat Phoenix officer unconscious sentenced to 10 years in prison

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced that a man who beat a Phoenix police officer to the point of unconsciousness last year has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated assault.

The agency said a woman flagged down an officer back in April 2023 near Central Avenue and Thomas Road. She said she was in a domestic violence dispute with her boyfriend, Rudy Gomez, 31, who had shattered her vehicle’s window while their three children were inside.

The County Attorney’s Office said the officer had tried to de-escalate the situation before Gomez beat the officer to the point the officer lost consciousness. The agency said Gomez continued to punch and kick the officer afterward, fracturing the officer’s orbital socket, breaking their nose and lacerating their head.

Gomez fled the area but was later arrested.

“It is hard to come up with words that adequately describe the savage, cruel beating of this officer, and the sheer inhumanity of the attack,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement. “We must support the people who protect us. One way we do that is to put defendants like this one in prison for as long as the law will allow.”
