Van hits stoplight, cop rams sedan in chaotic JWP crash with state police response

State police are on the scene of a chaotic crash on the John Wayne strip at Edison Road.

The crash reported at 3:36 p.m. today has closed outer John Wayne Parkway lanes and has traffic at a “dead stop” in all directions, says a witness at the scene.

State troopers at 3:50 p.m. were assisting Maricopa Police Department and Maricopa Fire and Medical Department with a crash involving a grey sedan and a maroon minivan, which had crashed into a stoplight on the northeast corner of that busy intersection.

First responders were evaluating one person at the scene. An ambulance left the scene at 3:50 p.m.

A Maricopa police pickup truck was ramming the sedan, trying to physically push it out of the intersection, which was blocked. The attempts did not appear successful with multiple tire burnouts, deafening screeching noises and black tire marks etched into the road, said reporters on the scene.

Police at 4 p.m. were sweeping debris from the intersection. Injuries are unknown.
