Phoenix Breaks Ground on 10 New Affordable Homes in Garfield Neighborhood

Phoenix is taking bold steps toward addressing its housing shortage with the groundbreaking of 10 new affordable homes in the Garfield neighborhood. The development, led by a partnership between the city of Phoenix and Trellis Community Development, is designed to bring sustainable, homeownership opportunities to working-class residents. City officials are calling the initiative a ‘transformative’ project for the area, with the goal of creating long-lasting stability and fostering community growth.

At the groundbreaking ceremony on December 18, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the significance of the development. “This groundbreaking marks our latest efforts in the ongoing and urgent work of creating and preserving much-needed housing in our community,” Mayor Gallego said. “I’m grateful for the partnerships with homebuilders that make these projects a reality, and excited for the individuals and families who will call these houses their home.”

The homes will be constructed on 10 city-owned lots purchased by Trellis, a nonprofit committed to providing affordable housing options across the Valley. Seven of the homes will be available to households earning up to 120% of the area median income (AMI), while three homes are reserved for those earning 80% AMI or less. To further support potential buyers, the project will provide down payment assistance and low-interest gap financing, ensuring these homes remain affordable for the long term.
