Valley Metro offering free transit on New Year’s Eve

Valley Metro will offer free rides on all transit services on New Year’s Eve starting at 7 p.m.

“Just get on board — no need to pay, scan or tap,” Valley Metro said in a news release.

On New Year’s Eve, the light rail and Tempe streetcar will operate on a weekday schedule with extended service hours until 2 a.m. Buses will operate on a normal weekday schedule.

On New Year’s Day, the light rail and Tempe streetcar will operate on a Sunday schedule. Buses will run on a Sunday schedule as well, without Express/RAPID service. Valley Metro customer service will be closed.

Alcohol was a factor in over 300 traffic deaths last year

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation , 332 people were killed and 3,864 were injured in alcohol-related crashes last year. Most alcohol-related car crashes happened at night on weekends.

Arizona saw its highest number of alcohol-related crashes in 2023, according to ADOT. Impairment played a factor in 4.7% of all car crashes.
