Phoenix Elementary School Board votes to close schools, lay off dozens of teachers and staff

PHOENIX — In a unanimous vote, the Phoenix Elementary School District will close two of its schools and lay off 65 teachers and staff.

After weeks of discussion and community input, the governing board made this decision to help make up a budget shortfall from declining student enrollment and less federal funding.

The 153-year-old district will shut down Paul Laurence Dunbar School and Maie Bartlett Heard Elementary School, with hundreds of students having to change schools. 65 positions made up of teachers, assistants, and other staff will also be let go…
