Mesa still among safest cities despite crime rise

Despite a 2.5% overall increase in crime last year from 2023, Mesa remains one of the country’s safest large municipalities, according to Mesa Police.

Based on data from 2024, Mesa saw 43 crimes per 1,000 residents – second behind Virginia Beach’s 40 crimes per 1,000, officials said. Mesa’s population was approximately 515,000.

“While the city has seen a slight 2.5% uptick in crime compared to similarly sized cities, those who live work and play in Mesa enjoy a safe and vibrant community,” Assistant Chief Lee Rankin told City Council at a recent study session. “With a strong focus on safety measures and community engagement the city continues to be a place where people can thrive and enjoy all the city has to offer.”…
