Gov. Hobbs signs bill requiring Phoenix PD to use rape kit tracking system

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill into law on Tuesday that will force the Phoenix Police Department to join a statewide system allowing sexual assault survivors to track where their rape kits are in the testing process.

House Bill 2581 had received bipartisan support in the state Legislature. Arizona’s Family Investigates had previously reported Phoenix police was the only agency in the state not using the program called Track-Kit, even though it would not cost the city. Under Track-Kit, each rape kit would get a barcode. Survivors can then log into the system, day or night, and see specifically where their kit is.

Instead, Phoenix Police said they were using their own system to do the tracking. Late last month, the department activated the “Sexual Assault Evidence Kit” tracking function within the CommunityConnect victim portal…
